Wandering Wednesday: Hiking Excursion on the Blue Heron Lagoon Trail

The Blue Heron Lagoon on Belle Isle State Park in Detroit Michigan

The Blue Heron Lagoon Trail is a hiking trail located on Belle Isle State Park in Detroit Michigan. The trail is about 2.2 Miles or 3.54 Km in length. The trail loops or at least it does on google maps but more on that later. Finding the trailhead can be a bit difficult as it would seem there is a bit of construction occurring in the area. Construction really is my favorite season in Michigan and it would seem that not even the parks are sparred. But I digress, the parking lot that leads to the trailhead was blocked off so I had to drive a bit further up the road and park at a different location and then walk my way back to the trailhead.

A big bonus is that the trail wasn’t crowed. I think I saw a total of 5 other people on the trail. Well, 5 people and one dog. Dogs are allowed on the trail but should be kept on a leash for the safety of the animal as well as follow hikers. Parts of the trail were a bit muddy as well but a little bit of mud isn’t really something that would detour me.

The Blue Lagoon Hiking Trail leading up to the Livingstone Memorial Light House

While making the trek along the Blue Heron Lagoon Trail hikers will come come upon a light house. This lighthouse is the Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse named after William Livingstone a native of Detroit. I’ll include a link here at the end of the article for more information on this building.

So as I mentioned this trail is suppose to be a loop and perhaps it did at one point in time but as of September 2021 the trail ends rather abruptly. There is a point that is fenced off because the trail suddenly becomes a golf course. While I guess you could hop the fence and cross the golf course I wasn’t feeling brash enough to cross it. Knowing my luck I’d get smacked in the face with a golf ball and that’s not something I’d want to deal with. So you get forced to turn around and back track the way you came.
